Since this is the gear that drives the mags, you should be able to remove one of them and see what you have.

I just posted the Spring 1991 edition of the Cadet-O-Gram Newsletter.  Thirteen Cadets were at Blakesburg that year.  It also mentions that Cadet number 459 was destroyed at the factory.  Here's a link to the newsletter:  http://www.culvercadet.com/newsletters/Cadet-O-Gram%20Spring%201991.pdf

Maintenance and Repair / Gear downlock pins
« on: March 21, 2012, 08:37:19 PM »
I've never been very happy with the way my downlock pins engaged.  Getting them to slide home was more tedious than I liked.  Last week I decided to see what was going on.  I checked the rigging and condition of the retract mechanism and found nothing amiss.  What I did find was that although the downlock pins looked like new, I think they were the early design that Service memo #8 requested be replaced.  The nose of the pin was round like a ball bearing.  I had a pair of the taper-nosed pins similar to Paul Rule's drawing.  They completely resolved the problem.  I've attached a photo so you can compare the old and new pins.  If anyone is planning to replace their gear pins, be aware that the length of the bullet nose may need to differ in order to accomodate variations between individual Cadets.

Documentation / Re: Culver Factory Service Memorandums

The website now has Service Memo #8 replaced with a slightly different issue.  This one is two pages with the first page having Jamieson's signature and there is an improved version of the drawing now moved to a second page.  I found this memo in the books for N29392.

Culver General Discussion / Re: Original Cadet colors??
« on: March 19, 2012, 10:51:03 PM »
Phil,

I checked with Stan Piteau, about the colors.  I thought he would be the best person to ask.  He has a lot of information on Culver production and history.

He says that he has  found only one reference to color in all of his Culver documents.  That one was for a plane to be delivered to the customer wearing yellow paint, with the trim color to be applied later.

All of the old photos are black and white, but at least you can get an idea of the paint schemes that were used.

Culver General Discussion / Re: 4AC-199 Franklin Engine Barn find
« on: March 18, 2012, 11:14:23 PM »
My guess is that you have one mag with an impulse coupling and one without.  With that configuration, you would normally start the engine on the one with the impulse coupling.  In addition to giving a hotter spark, the coupling also retards the ignition at cranking speeds.  You would switch to both mags after the engine starts.

Maintenance and Repair / Re: Woodwork
« on: March 17, 2012, 01:23:12 PM »
Some of the screws securing the fairing located on the horizontal stab, only go into the plywood skin.    It's that way on both of my Cadets, but I don't know if that holds true for all of Cadets.  There's no access to the back side of the stab skin.    We need to have recommended procedures for repairing reamed-out screw holes for both types of holes though.

I've dealt with this issue on one of the Bellanca Vikings that I've owned.  On that Bellanca, the areas where screws were fastened to plywood were accessable from the back side.  Because of that, Bellanca used fasteners attached to the back side of the skin.  I've replaced a few of those.  On the Cadet, when a hole is enlarged, you're faced with trying so solve the problem from the outside.  The blind nuts that I'm aware of all rely on the mechanical friction resulting from being squeezed onto the skin.  I'm not sure that would work so well on plywood.  Is there another type that would work well on plywood?

Maintenance and Repair / Enlarged screw holes
« on: March 16, 2012, 12:36:20 PM »
I'm wondering if anyone has devised a solution for the problem of screw holes in wood becoming enlarged and no longer properly fitting the original size screw.  It occurs most often where the screw is only going into the thin plywood skin.  I really hate putting in larger screws and thought I would see if someone knows of a practical method of repairing these reamed-out holes.

I've considered saturating the holes with thin C-A glue to strengthen the wood in the area of the hole, but that does nothing for a hole that's already oversize.  Perhaps one of the products made for wooden boats would work.

This is a recent photo of the hangar appearing in the shot of the prototype Cadet.  It's the original Port Columbus hangar.  Does anyone know if  this building was the location of the original factory?  With the Cadet and a Dart parked out front, it appears that it could be.
