Maintenance and Repair / Serial numbers
« on: August 16, 2015, 08:37:54 AM »
Does anyone know if and where the factory would have placed aircraft serial numbers on major components such as the wings and fuselage?  I've see them stamped on the inside corner of windshield frames but, haven't noticed them on wooden parts.

It would be nice to know the history of a component when other documentation is absent.

False alarm on the Culver parts.  She just sent some photos and they weren't For a Culver.  I'm not sure what they are.  Maybe for a glider.

Parts For Sale / Culver wings and horizontal stab

I received the following email from a lady in Texas:

Dear Bill,

I found your web page (culvercadet.com) via a google search...

My dad had owned a Culver Cadet at one time. He passed away a year
ago, and we have some airplane parts that I don't know what to do
with.

There are wings and the horizontal stabilizers from the tail.

They have been in the garage since I was a kid.

There may be some other parts; I'm not sure I would recognize them.

Do you think they would be useful to anyone?

They are in the Dallas area. I currently live about three hours
driving distance from there. If you know of anyone in the area, I
would be happy to arrange a time to meet. If you know of another
contact I should try, I would appreciate any information.

I'm not trying to "get rich" off of this...just to help people
out if possible (plus I do need to clean out the house).

Thank you,

Ellen

If anyone is interested, let me know and I'll forward her contact info.

Culver General Discussion / Re: Spinner for Aeromatic propeller

Here's a photo of N41710 taken at an airshow at Bowman Field in 1967.  This is my Franklin powered Cadet with an Aeromatic prop and a Hampton spinner.

I may have some photos.  I'll look when I return to their location.  That will be around December 3rd.

I had a Franklin powered Cadet with an aeromatic prop back in the 1960's.  (N41710)  It had a Hampton spinner.  The spinner had a bullet shaped profile to accommodate the counterweights.

Culver General Discussion / Re: Horizontal Stabilizer Strut

I think that all of the Cadets with struts, had them added in the field.  I have checked the FAA Airworthiness file on a couple of the planes with the struts and didn't find any entries pertaining to them.

Maintenance and Repair / Re: SCAT duct to nowhere?
« on: June 27, 2014, 01:14:37 PM »
LFA's and LCA's both had openings below the prop for the purpose of oil cooling.  The LFA had sort of an oval shaped hole, while the LCA had a rectangular duct set a little lower in the nose bowl.  The Continental powered Cadets should have a baffle running under the crankcase designed to hold this cooling air along the bottom of the case.  This is important as it acts as a pretty good oil cooler.  If the SCAT tubes extend beyond the front of the case, or if this baffle is missing, you probably won't be getting adequate oil cooling.

Parts Wanted / Re: Landing gear leaf spring
« on: May 13, 2014, 10:53:13 PM »
Hi Stefan,

I just wanted to clarify that the O-rings are simply a better way of keeping the oil in the strut from leaking out.  The mod does not convert it to an air/oil strut.  It's the absence of the oil due to leakage, that usually causes the spring to break.  When the oil in the strut is forced through a small orifice, a damping action occurs, preventing the strut from continually bottoming-out.  Bill

Here's a link to the seals for the fuel gauge: http://r.ebay.com/7zWsPc

You'll need to improvise a seal for the fuel filler neck.  If you don't seal this area, any overflow when refueling will run into the cabin.  Here's a link to a product on the Aircraft Spruce website that may work: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/valcosealant.php?clickkey=4275

This 1946 Flying Magazine cover shows a Culver V with an experimental registration with what appears to be yokes instead of stick controls.

I went ahead and advertised my Cadet.  It's on Barnstormers as well as AirplaneGuys.com.  The AirplaneGuys site has details as well as a slide show.  If you click on the Cadet photo, it'll start the slide show.   Here's a link to the AirplaneGuys site:
