Does anyone know if the smooth, treadless tires were also factory installed on new Cadets?

Culver General Discussion / Re: Culver Photos Wanted
« on: July 08, 2012, 11:11:56 AM »
I received a note from Stefan Janes this morning.  You may recall that last year he purchased Cadet N25U and exported it to his home in Germany.  He now has it flying and has based it on a 1500 ft glider field near Ramstein AFB.  He included a couple of photos which I have posted on the website.  The photos are also in the rotation on the home page.

Documentation / Sky Ranch Engineering Manual
« on: June 20, 2012, 09:29:50 PM »
I've found a lot of answers to aircraft maintenance-related questions by Googling key words related to my concern.  I also noticed that a really high percentage of answers to my questions have come from the Sacramento Sky Ranch website.  I recently discovered that they also publish a book called "Sky Ranch Engineering Manual" written by John Schwaner.  I ordered it and it arrived a couple of days ago.  I have to say that this is a terrific book that really covers the fine points of aircraft engines.  Whether you're working on engines/installations or just operating your aircraft,  you'll certainly find this book valuable. For $21.95 it's a bargain.  Here's a link to the book on their website:

Does anyone know of a source for the aluminum channel extrusions that the bottom edges of the windshield fit into?

One possibility is that they reinforced the spars on the PQ8 drones and just used the same spar for the Cadets.

I've attached a photo of a hollow-spar Cadet with a hole punched throught the spar webbing.

Here's a link to a pretty good aircraft antenna article on the XCOM website:

Here's a link to a site with a number of accident reports on Culver PQ-8 and PQ-14 crashes.  Most of them evidently crashed while under radio control.

I can recommend the "Wood, Fabric and Tailwheels Fly-In",  held at Lee Bottom Flying Field.  It's always the last Saturday of Septermber.  A couple of years ago, my Cadet was the 430th aircraft to arrive that day.  You'll find everything from Wacos to DC3's attending the grass strip event.  Here's a link:  http://www.leebottom.com/FLY%20IN%20information.html

Paul Rule has provided a Franklin model 4AC-199 Operators Handbook and Parts Catalog, which is now posted on the website.  There are also some Franklin service bulletins included.

I did as Brett suggested and submitted a request to the FAA for research on serial number 459.  I received a response from them today.  I've attached a copy of the letter below.

Culver General Discussion / Re: I fly GPS moving map
« on: May 11, 2012, 10:33:04 AM »
I bought an iFly 700 when they were first introduced.  It's attached to the right side of my Cadet panel with Velcro.

The unit does everything the company claims and they continually provide software updates with expanded capabilities.  The annual cost of the data updates is very reasonable.

The only issue I have with it is the narrow screen viewing angle.  Mounting it flat on the right side of the panel makes it hard to read.  It does come with a flexible ball-type mounting fixture, but I haven't wanted to screw it to my panel.

Until I started using the moving map sectional charts I never considered that when in course-up mode, all writing would be upside-down when on a southerly heading.

The viewing angle may be improved on the new 720 model.

Maintenance and Repair / Re: Worn landing gear scissors
« on: April 29, 2012, 08:42:57 PM »
When faced with having to repair worn bolt holes in the landing gear scissors,  It seems to me that the obvious fix is welding and re-drilling them.  The welding part is easy.  It's drilling the holes in exactly the right position and angle that's more complicated.  If after drilling the holes, the front bolts in the upper and lower scissors are not exactly parallel, the alignment of the wheels will be off.  Because the front bolts are so close to the vertical axis of the oleo, a small error in drilling the holes will produce a big alignment problem.  Of course the answer is to make a drill guide/fixture to hold the drill in alignment.  It would be great if we had one that we could pass around to whoever was in need.  Does anyone have an interest in this?
