Documentation / Re: Gear mods

It's my understanding that spats were on the prototype plane but not put into production.  Some people do have them but I've been told that the gas tanks were moved from the wings and the spats were removed because of design problems ??  I think I read somewhere that spins were the problem and rather than work on design changes they just eliminated the problem with a place card. I'm sure some of you know much more about this and can fill in the blanks.

Does anyone have any info on antenna's from Advanced Aircraft Electronics?  I don't know how they would guarantee the antenna once it is sealed in the wing if it did not work.  Sure sounds good but is $150 for a pig in a poke.  I have not talked with them about their products.

Culver General Discussion / performance of Culver

Depending on your engine, please give a little info on performance of your plane if now flying.  Stall speed, spin recovery and speed at recovery.  Rotation speed and over the fence and cruise speed.
I know this depends on your prop also.

After reading everyones response it appears to me that the dash pot was intended as a stop gap measure in case the wheel got away from you?   I can see that you don't want to just dump the gear and this would soften the effect of the drop if you dropped it.

You beat me to this post Bill.  I've been looking at units that you bury in the tail or down the wing spar.  I have not talked to anyone that has them but the tail is out for me as it is sealed and I don't want to open it for an antenna.
My question  is do they work as well as the external units which I had rather not have because of drag as well as the plane being antique.

I too would like to have the dash pot.  From what little I know, it looks like it would be a simple thing to rig by either putting in an 0 ring or finding a suitable small hydraulic cylinder with the right amount of pressure for this to work.  Since this plane is out of production, anything done by standards should be accepted as it is not a critical issue because we still have the wheel.

Go to the accident reports of the Culver and there is a couple of accidents directly related to the expander brakes.  Because of this and the fact that this plane is out of production, I chose Grove wheels and brakes which is acceptable.

I'm doing the Franklin 90 because it came with the plane.  Lots of people look for the 100 crank to go in the C85.  Don's dream machine wants more than $20,000 for one which is too much for me. Guess I'll fly with the Franklin and keep looking for something better.  It is my understanding that a C-100 would make it experimental and once that change is made, I'm told, you never get it back in certification.

Okay guys, somewhere in Arkansas there is another complete Culver Cadet hanging in a hanger. I'm told it is not for sale but things do change.  It is in central Ar. somewhere so keep looking.  If I get more info I'll let you know as I don't see the guy that has seen it hanging in the hanger in some small airport.

It sounds neat to me even though I hav not seen it.  I do have the diagram but seeing it gives a different meaning to me.

Culver General Discussion / Mechanical landing gear
« on: January 02, 2012, 02:16:31 PM »
It is my understanding from the A&P that the landing gear has a form of hydraulic damping system built in to slowly lower the gear before locking it in place with the leaver. It appears to be a cannister with the fluid in it and causes the pressure on the landing gear so that it slowly lowers rather than just falling and having to lock it in place. Seems to be quite a unique, simple system for something built in the early 40's.

I'm Woody Gillespie and live in Heber Springs, Arkansas.  We are currently rebuilding a 1941 Culver Cadet with a Franklin 90 engine.  It's been 40 years since I;ve been involved in flying so this is like starting over again.  The only things I need now is more money and time!

Scott,
I found an A&P that does engine work and is very knowledgeable.  Very clean environment and very focused.  He and a friend  have restored Franklin's before so they took my engine. They are at the Melbourne Ar. airport which is about 40 miles N. of me.  When you decide, let me know and I'll see if he is interested.  Where is your home base?     W
