Culver General Discussion / NX20946 serial number 101
« on: March 01, 2012, 09:46:08 PM »
Here's an interesting photo of the prototype NX20946, showing the original gear doors.  If you examine it closely, it has a different rudder and doesn't appear to have any wing slots.  The area behind the cabin door appears to be metal, like the L-AR-90.  The tailwheel is also missing.  I've posted a slightly larger image on the website.

Is that Al Mooney in the photo?

The March edition of Sport Aviation magazine arrived today.  I noticed on page 98 that there's a photo of the Stits Sky Baby, showing small slots in both the top and bottom wings.  I wonder what Ray Stits would have to say about his reason for installing slots on this tiny biplane.

If anyone has updated information regarding the status of any of the Cadets on the Serial Number list, please forward it to me and I'll edit the list.

Maintenance and Repair / Re: Leveling the Cadet

Brett,

It looks like you are right about the longeron to which the lower engine mount attaches to being referred to as the lower longeron.  Evidently the factory painted marks on the outside of the fuselage, aft of the lower engine mount bolts.  Here's a link to a scanned page from the PQ-8 Erection and Maintenance Handbook.  I've highlighted the line that refers to the marks.   I doubt that the accuracy of the bolt placement is good enough to say that placing a mark a certain distance aft of the rear lower bolt would work across the fleet of Cadets.  I suspect that the factory leveled the plane, hung the plumb line and placed the mark on each aircraft individually.

Culver General Discussion / Continental engine mount drawings.
« on: February 26, 2012, 08:28:57 PM »
I've posted the engine mount drawings and jigging instructions for Neal LaFrance's Cadet STF.  I've also posted scanned copies of the Culver factory LCA engine mount drawings.  I reduced the size of the STF drawings for web viewing and printing on home printers.  There's also a link for those wanting to download Neal's full size drawings.

I've always thought that the plumb-line was supposed to be hung from the bolt head on the outside of the fuselage.  That would make it possible to align it with a mark on the bottom of the lower longeron.  That would only require removal of the aluminum panel on the bottom of the fuselage to reveal the mark.  If you look at the type certificate data sheet for the PQ-8/Lark 95, you'll see that the PQ-8 uses the plumb line method and the Lark 95 uses a level placed on the forward face of the main spar.  I believe this difference may be due to the fairing covering the bolt heads on the Lark 95.  If anyone has a Cadet with the mark still visible, it would be great to get a photo of it.

I wonder if the original drawings that Culver submitted to the CAA could be located.  Now that the courts have ruled that the FAA must make them available, we could have a source for acquiring first generation scans of the drawings.  Here's a link to an article on the AAA website regarding this:

Culver General Discussion / Re: Display Your Actual Name on the Forum

So far today, we've had 7 attempts by spammers to join the forum.  They've had usernames like: axiosiubdub, Bunteerit, PeleignileCes, Fluoreetert,  Amemiasoorm, Obsepteve and acarvedubredo.  Most of these apparently originate from the Ukraine.  Anyone wishing to join the forum should include enough aviation related info on the application that I can know it's not being generated by a spambot.

Culver General Discussion / Re: performance of Culver
« on: February 24, 2012, 07:41:00 PM »
Comparing the performance of different prop pitches is only useful when you are comparing props from a single manufacturer.  I've been told by one prop manufacturer that pitch numbers aren't necessarily calculated the same way at all companies.  I'm guessing it has something to do with the airfoil used on the prop.  Pooling the results that we've experienced is a good way for us to benefit from this forum.  Finding a used prop to fit a Cadet is almost impossible.  Buying a new one and having it turn out to be unsatisfactory is a pretty expensive foul-up.

I think it would be a good idea to see what the manifold pressure is when running a 70X54 at cruising airspeed and RPM, before ordering a prop with a bigger pitch.  You might also consider a 68" diameter prop if you're going to increase the pitch.

Modifications / Re: Franklin engines
« on: February 23, 2012, 01:07:52 PM »
I believe the Franklin O235 was designed to bolt directly onto a Continental O200 mount.

As for the horsepower increase, the PQ-8A used the Lycoming O290 of 125 HP.  I don't know if the fuselage was beefed up, but they sure put an ugly enlarged rudder on it.

If you are willing to go experimental, it might be economically feasible, but I think trying to get the FAA to bless it for a standard C of A would be very difficult (expensive).

It would probably be worthwhile to post those rigging instructions on the website.  If you'll send them to me, I'll get them up.
